Support Groups

Estrangement is a complex and often lonely experience. Designed to complement individual estrangement coaching, you can participate in a bi-weekly This Isn't What I ExpectedⓇ support group. Support groups provide a safe environment where participants share their estrangement experiences and receive encouragement from others facing similar challenges.

Estrangement Support Groups

Group support is a powerful tool, especially when navigating an estrangement with a loved one. I structure each group session using this agenda:

  • Check-In. What's happened since our last meeting? Has something triggered you that you want to talk about? Each participant has ~ 2 minutes to share.

  • Open Group Discussion. During this part of the session, we cover topics the group participants want to discuss and relevant estrangement-related articles.

  • End with Self-Care. We often forget to give ourselves self-care when handling a difficult situation. What are you going to do for self-care until we meet again?

A Safe & Supportive Space

As a certified estrangement coach, I carefully moderate the support group sessions by following these rules of engagement:

Confidentiality

The topics we discuss during the support group sessions are intensely personal. We want to create and maintain a safe space for each other. While you're encouraged to use the lessons discussed, keeping what individuals share confidential is crucial. Confidentiality means you don't talk about others or their situation or use identifying information. This confidentiality vow applies even if you become friends with someone in the group.

No Interruptions

The support group's purpose is to hold a safe place for all individuals. Everyone is encouraged to participate. When an individual is speaking, others are actively listening without interrupting. My role as facilitator is to make sure everyone is heard, the space is safe and supportive, and intervene when appropriate.

All Emotions Are Okay

Estrangement is an intense experience. It's okay to laugh, cry, and use language you need to use as part of the healing process.

No Judgment

It's only human to have judgments in your head. We often have different upbringings, cultural backgrounds, and experiences. While you may have judgemental thoughts, please don't share those judgments out loud. Respect others wherever they are in their journey.

Show Your Face On Video

Our support group sessions are virtual. Respect others by following video conference etiquette by showing your face on video. Use the mute button when necessary. Be present and participate.

Receive & Give Support to Others

Support groups provide a safe place to talk while going through estrangement. When joining a This Isn't What I ExpectedⓇ estrangement group, think about what you want to get out of the group and how you can help others going through a similar experience.

The first step is to schedule a 15-minute complimentary virtual meeting with me. In this call, we will discuss your needs, my estrangement coaching approach and discover if we're a fit. After we have agreed to work together, we will schedule a time for you to participate in one of my This Isn't What I ExpectedⓇ estrangement support groups.
